Why Women Defining AI

We started Women Defining AI to make AI approachable and accessible for a broader group of women & nonbinary individuals in our networks and communities

When we first got together to create an “AI community”  in 2023, our goal was simply to connect womxn and share AI knowledge from their own explorations.

During a time when interacting with AI models & technology felt more natural than ever (use natural conversation!) and traditional coding & building was significantly easier for nontechnical people to just get started, it was frustrating to see incredible, smart, capable womxn around us opting out. So we created a spot to build in public — to encourage more womxn to experiment, share, and collaborate on all things AI.

What started as a “study group” rapidly transformed into a vast support network & source of both encouragement and expertise for now over 600 members, actively engaged in the Slack. And we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible.

The benefits are beyond AI, beyond community. We are creating a movement around amplifying and supporting women & nonbinary individuals in tech.
